The Most Misunderstood Pilates Cue — and What It Actually Means
“Engage your core.” It's the most repeated — and most misunderstood — cue in the room. Here's what it actually means.

“Engage your core.” If you've done any Pilates, you've heard it. And if you're like most people, you responded by gripping your abs and holding your breath. That's almost never what we mean.
What it isn't
Engaging your core isn't sucking your stomach in, clenching, or bracing as hard as you can. All of that tends to switch off the very muscles we're trying to reach, and it stops you breathing well — which defeats the purpose.
What it actually means
- A gentle, deep connection — think 10% effort, not 100%
- Breath that keeps moving, ribs softening down
- Support that comes from the whole cylinder: deep abdominals, back, pelvic floor and breath working together
Real core strength is quiet. If you're straining to show it, you've probably lost it.
In a private session, we spend time finding what a true, gentle connection feels like for you — so the cue finally makes sense in your body, not just in theory.
